In this prequel to the three earlier novels in the Ellis Portal Mystery Series, Ellis, a disgraced former judge turned sleuth, is taken back to his law school days. He and a fellow student visit the Toronto morgue to witness an autopsy -- and the cadaver vanishes. Ellis tries to find out how and why the corpse was stolen and to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death. This novel and the earlier ones in the series have been optioned for a movie series. The second in the series, The Feast of Stephen, won Canada's Arthur Ellis Award for best mystery.
