The London Daily Post has been purchased recently by an American entrepreneur, Hal MacQuillan, who ousts the editor, assumes the position himself, and sets about cheapening the tone and quality of the paper. Among those whose jobs may soon fall under the axe is Raine Morgan, writer of the gossip and society page. But before his restructuring can begin, MacQuillan is literally stabbed in the back. The suspects include many of the staff of the Post as well as a group who perceived the victim as a propagandist for Irish independence. Meanwhile, knives similar to the murder weapon are appearing in the most unusual place, and Rain finds herself drawn to investigate MacQuillan's personal business and affairs. And since she and her boyfriend Oliver are on the outs, Rain pursues a romantic intrigue with the inspector handling the police investigation of the murder while she works to find a solution to this enigmatic case.
