The novel begins in Vero Beach, Florida and moves on to New York City and the office of the District Attorney. Ben Searle, now in his sixties, begins a quest for redemption, having decided at long last to turn in his college roommate for a murder committed in Greenwich Village in 1949. The violence of over forty years past has found its echo in 1992 when a young man is killed in a seedy backwater town in central Florida. The two heinous crimes are tied together in a skillful rendering of one manââ,¬â"¢s life, now thrown into disarray as he sets out in a pursuit of justice. But Ben Searle is not alone and others are brought into account as one and all are gripped by human frailty when memory becomes blurred and courage, cowardice, and honesty collide in lives well lived and in lives ill served.
