Audrey Driscoll grew up in her grandfather's San Francisco mansion. Her parents had been killed in a tragic accident when she was a child. By 1932 she was a second mother to her beautiful younger sister, a high-spirited companion for her elderly grandfather, and a "spinster" without a life or love for herself. Then she decides to strike out on her own and follow the wanderlust in her heart. While in Europe, she meets famous travel writer Charles Parker-Scott. Together they cross two continents in an exotic journey of adventure and desire. And in war-ravaged China at a besieged orphanage, Audrey decides to stay while Charles returns to safety. Much later, when she returns to San Francisco with her adopted baby, Audrey faces new challenges, new choices, and is always torn by the wanderlust in her soul.
