In 1821, after barely surviving a hellish voyage from Ireland on board a "coffin ship," Tom and Maggie Ross are among the remaining half of the emigrants who finally arrive in Saint John, New Brunswick. The rest are at the bottom of the ocean. The quest to find their promised land turns into a terrifying journey into an unknown savage wilderness that puts their lives at risk every step of the way. Unknown to them, a twist of fate puts them on a collision course with Tom's long-lost brothers, Hugh and Sandy; not to mention a vengeful killer they thought was dead, Sam MacKay.
