Mercer Early, a hot young litigator at the most prestigious African-American law firm on the West Coast, seems to have everything going for him when he aces his first high-profile trial. But when Mercer's acquitted client, the drug dealer son of a prominent preacher, winds up dead, things start to turn. The main suspect is a white vice detective with a reputation as a racist--not exactly the firm's kind of client. The suspect's girlfriend insists that Mercer take the case, offering some surprising and incriminating evidence. Not about her lover, but about Mercer himself--and the past he has been desperately trying to outrun. His only chance against blackmail is to defend one very guilty-looking white cop...and somehow find a way to win.
