Keith Randall is a gifted writer but a reclusive and lonely human being. Years of despair have fueled his dark novels, but a sudden rush of memory changes his direction. He pens a historical romance dedicated to his late wife Mel, retelling their story. The book is heartfelt and deeply touches Keith's agent Lannie, who is amazed at the depth of Keith's love and subsequent loss. Once finished, however, Keith feels that he has lost the last tie to Mel that he had; one that he'll never have again. Though a stock photograph that reminds Keith of his wife is used on the book jacket in order to keep his involvement a secret, the result is anything but. Keith, Lannie and two strangers are drawn together through the book, but will their involvement be Keith's salvation? Or will it drive him so deep into the darkness that he will never return?
