Terrell Newman, newly promoted to Lieutenant in the San Antonio police force, is called to investigate the death of a young woman found laid out in her bed as if she had been prepared for burial by a funeral home. As he begins to piece together the evidence, Newman realizes that this is not the first killing and won't be the last. With the help of eccentric FBI forensic psychologist Walter Selig, he builds up a profile of a man who is projecting his fear of abandonment onto the women he meets through the Internet. The novel explores the mind of the killer and opens as he prepares to kill the San Antonio victim, then follows him as he seeks out his next victims while Newman tries to track him down before he can kill again. As Selig predicts, there are radical departures from his previous pattern of killings.
