Bradford's first instinct was to blow a resounding blast on his whistle, hoping that one or more of his colleagues on adjoining beats would hear it. Then he pounded up Swanton Street until he reached the source of the clamour, which came from the area of Number Fifteen. He knew the house well, for it was occupied by one Spotty Jim, who had for some time been under police observation.
