"We must stay together."
Susannah and Bethlehem are runaways. Susannah is an orphan sent to live on a southern plantation with her uncle and aunt. She wants to go home. Bethlehem is a slave. She wants to be free. They decide that there is a better life waiting for them in the North. A life without horrible rules and beatings. A place where they can be best friends, no matter what.
But their journey is not going to be easy. They've got to travel from Virginia to Vermont -- on foot. The only thing that keeps them going is the promise of a new life.
The promise of freedom.
