Spiro is a carefree and fun-loving shooting star. He is given an assignment by his teacher Mr. Zoots to find a sad human or animal on Earth and to be its constant companion until it is no longer sad. Only when he has accomplished this can he return home. And, this is very important, he is not to solve its problems for it; he is to guide it in solving its own problems. He is taken to the home of a little girl, Abbey, who is going through a traumatic time in her life due to the separation of her parents and her move with her mother to another town. She feels very alone; but, with Spyro's help, Abbey is able to turn her loneliness into happiness.
