There is nothing worse than being the smallest or the shortest or the last. It's even worse if you're the runt of the litter and especially bad if it's a litter of pigs. When that happens, the Pigman comes and takes you away. And Daggie Dogfoot, the runt of Mrs. Barleylove's litter, is in just that kind of danger. But Daggie is a pig of remarkable qualities -- his front feet look like a puppy's -- and he's not about to let the Pigman get him. Instead, he runs away.

Determined to prove how special he is, Daggie decides to learn how to fly. What other pig can fly? But when he meets Felicity, the duck, and Izaak, the otter, they teach him how to swim. What other pig can swim? Of course, no one on the farm believes him until Daggie manages to save the farm, all the animals, and even the Pigman when a flood is about to swamp them all. Then everyone agrees that indeed, PIGS CAN FLY!
