Nate Stonehouse and his partner, Riley, were the most successful homicide detectives in the history of the Columbus Division of Police. But then the Washburn case came along and everything crashed and burned. They both retired from the job under a cloud, Riley disappeared, and Nate now runs an off-campus residence for students at The Ohio State University. He also takes occasional cases from the Public Defender's office, but only if he believes the defendant is innocent. And, on rare occasions, he takes a private case to help a student in trouble. Now, Lindsay Peterson, a plump, little freshman with a singing voice like and angel is missing and her professor, a knockout violinist for the Columbus symphony, has asked him to find little Lindsay before she gets in to some real trouble. If he is to succeed, Nate will have to deal with the a gang called the Latin Kings , the Dixie Mafia, an ex-partner who is a loose cannon, the Columbus police, and his own past. And any one of those could get him into big trouble.
