Dash and her younger brother J.C. begin to connect the blond surfer who lives near the Fire Island cottage with a dark, bearded visitor and some strange, after-dark happenings.
Dash Littlewood is sure that summer is going to be a bore. With a broken leg, how can she have any fund on Fire Island? Even though the cast is now off, she still can't swim or even walk very far. In fact, there's hardly anything she can do except practice her drawing. So she draws everything in sight -- her little brother, J.C., her neighbors -- anything or anyone that crosses her line of vision.
Certainly the man with the bushy black beard catches Dash's attention when he gets off the ferry -- there's something very strange about him. But what? J.C. figures it out -- the man holds his elbow at an odd angle. Naturally, Dash draws a picture of him. What Dash and J.C. don't know is that Dash has just begun the most exciting and dangerous summer of their lives!
