Amy Lansing, a 44-year-old teacher in a small-town Iowa high school on the verge of closing, is suffering an estrangement from her husband since the death of their disabled child six years previously. Though she has tried to retain the image of the perfect marriage, a lingering guilt in connection with the death of her child leads to frustration with her life at home and at school. Varying degrees of attraction to a student and to the board president of a neighboring town add to her anxieties. The picture changes only when, after a moment of candid communication, Joe and Amy break down the barrier between them and reach out again to one another.
