The normal pangs of growing up are difficult at best. For Leslie, they are complicated by a mother embittered by divorce. In many ways the situation has made Leslie self-sufficient beyond her years, until she becomes involved in a problem that she can't handle alone.
Leslie is just another person among the maze of students at her school, so she is surprised when Chip Carter asks to driver her home after a party. On the way, they stop at a coffee house that features hard rock and where marijuana is smoked freely. The rest of the ride across town is dim in Leslie's mind until she hears the sickening impact of their car with a pedestrian. Chip insists that the man was not hurt and goes on. When the death is announced in the newspaper, however, Leslie can ignore the tragedy no longer.
Fraught with fears and guilt, Leslie has nowhere to turn. Her mother is preoccupied with her own problems. Chip's attitude is cold and sinister
