Recovering from a long streak of bets on horses that couldn't lose but did, Shifty Lou Anderson is more than happy to augment his meager income by playing part-time chauffeur to an elderly oddball millionaire--especially since most of the driving takes Shifty and his employer directly to the Santa Anita racetrack. But Lucius J. Bedlington means to take a trip much farther than Shifty cares to follow... a leisurely perambulation into the grave.
Nothing, not even a sweet little filly with heart, can dissuade Lucius from preparing to end it all--until a stunning brunette turns up claiming to be his long-lost daughter. Under her sunny influence, Lucius recovers his will to live. But while he's just beginning to enjoy his life, a number of pretty young women are losing theirs. And when one of those luckless ladies turns out to be a friend of Shifty's, the horseplaying prestidigitator becomes a wanted man. Can the best magician in the business conjure up the real murderer ... or is he finally out of tricks?
