Young Roger the Chapman--or peddler--earns his living selling lace and silk throughout the English countryside, but solving puzzles is his real passion. When he's approached by a wealthy alderman to find his missing son, Roger jumps at the chance to put his talents to use.

Emboldened by his discovery that others also seem to have disappeared from the same inn, Roger is determined to solve the mystery. But the closer he moves to its center, the nearer he gets to the danger that waits there not only for the occasional traveler, but for overly inquisitive chapmen as well.
