That was how British actor Julian Tremain put the offer to Kate, an actress and native New Yorker. She was to portray his sister in a new play in London; to perfect her characterization he insisted she spend three months living in his house, studying his accent and mannerisms.

She would be quite safe, he told her bluntly. She wasn't his type. And Kate knew at once that he -- brilliant, mercurial, superficial and somehow driven -- certainly wasn't hers.
