Whilst they were taking sheep to the meadows early one morning, Jackson Wren and Zeke Rumney noticed a coat lying in a ditch. As Rumney stooped to pick it up, he realised it was covering a dead body. The two men were able to identify the corpse as that of Peta Mossop, who had recently been complaining of receiving anonymous letters and phone calls. When amateaur sleuth Miss Melinda Pink arrives in the district to investigate a case of sheep stealing, she becomes involved in murder.
