Eden's quiet life on her parents' estate is interrupted by the advent of Seth, the adopted son and man of affairs of the Duke of Derwent. Until then Eden's mission in life was to protect her flighty, beautiful young sister Zoe from her own passions, a mission that forced her to deny her own love of painting. Seth had his own mission as well: to guard the Derwent family against the illicit and seemingly insane passions of the Duke's heir Bel.
