A war in which men die in great numbers in mud-filled trenches is regarded with loathing. Yet often the same people justify the actions of small bands of men who fight behind enemy lines. These men are rarely depicted as vicious and brutal. Instead, they are considered daring, surmounting incredible odds and hardships: should one of them be fatally wounded, unselfishly he will stay behind to hold up the pursuing enemy… In fact, the reality is somewhat different.
