Rance Dehner, an operative for the Lowrie Detective Agency, pursues a wanted killer to the small town of Hardin. After bringing down his opponent in a gunfight, Dehner discovers the man was in town to murder Leona Carson - a penniless teenaged girl with a baby. Seeking to discover why anyone would hire a gunman to dispose of Carson, Dehner finds himself dodging bullets from an onslaught of professional killers - whilst uncovering the shameful secrets of Hardin's leading citizens.
