Unable to Return — George McDonald

By late April 1945, World War II in Germany was essentially over. The Russian and American troops met and celebrated the occasion and their triumphs near the Mulde River which was the left tributary of the Elbe in East Central Germany. In most wars the object of the victor was to gain additional land. In World War II, with one exception, that wasn't the case. For the Allied Forces the prizes of the conflict were the German educators and scientists who were responsible for the development and production of jet engines and fuel propelled rockets. Entering each military controlled city were now teams consisting of army medics and graves registration personnel. The medics hoping to find the wounded and the other team member to collect "dog tags" on those who didn't survive. At a mere shell of a building, they find one seriously wounded but barely alive German soldier. Transported back to the field hospital it is learned he bears the same name of a scientist that the Americans are trying to locate. American Intelligence officers are notified but are unable to interrogate the soldier until his condition improves. They are anxious to remove him out of Germany and bring him to America. When the Russians learn that he is in the hands of the Americans they put in a plan to capture him and bring him back to Russia.
