This is the heart-wrenching story of a wild young boy named Ben and a Plain Mennonite girl named Lois who meet at school one day-a meeting that will change both their lives in ways neither could ever imagine. Ben is a wild, scrappy young man, always in trouble at school and at home.

His life is plagued by a father and other family members who hate him for some mysterious reason, a brother who is always hateful to him, and teachers and a school principal who are always ready to punish him. Lois comes from a far different world. Her world is filled with parents and siblings who love her; a world filled with happiness and a family that truly cares about each other. Ben and Lois have fallen in love. They seem destined to be together, even though they are both very young. But their love is being continually tested and they must fight to keep it.

Trouble follows them wherever they go. When Ben enters Lois's world, he finds peace there. He begins to battle that wild, unloved and unloving boy inside and slowly allows the loving boy he really is to show through. At the same time, Lois is discovering Ben's world and is intrigued by it.
