Anne Hendlay, owner of the Indian Arts Shoppe in Santa Fe, had two pressing problems. One: encouraging struggling young local artists by exhibiting their work side by side with Indian handicrafts, without offending regular customers who might find the things a little too avantgarde. Two: winning over her sweetheart Robert Lund's wealthy -- and rather stuffy -- family. Under the circumstances, Anne really had no spare time or energy for the assignments she was suddenly handed by the head of the department store where she had gotten her start: to persuade talented, up-and-coming young retail executive David Congdon, who had quit his job to "savor enchanted New Mexico," to go back to work.
