Journalist Edward Barham is found dead in his home, a puncture wound testimony to his death by lethal injection. A cryptic note by his side seems to suggest suicide, but Detective Inspector Tom Mariner feels there is something a little too staged about events, especially as he had witnessed Barham pick up a prostitute earlier in the evening. When the police discover that Barham's severely autistic brother Jamie may have witnessed the killing, Mariner is determined to build a relationship with Jamie--and with Anna Barham, Jamie's new, and reluctant, guardian.
