The Wishing Star — Norma Johnston

Sixteen year old Julie Forrest, shy and dazzled by her beautiful mother's glamor, longs for some magic that will make her belong, make her exactly look like everyone else. She is too old now to believe still in the miraculous powers attributed by legend to the 'Wishing Star', the exquisite brooch which was her mother's good luck piece during her years onstage.

Julie finds the magic when her family moves unexpectedly to Massachusetts, where her father becomes superintendent of the whole education program and also principal of a new high school. Julie believes her wishing star is coming true when she makes new friends and falls in love with Bill, but then the wishing star is lost. After some trials and tribulations, Julie finally discovers the true magic of the 'Wishing Star'. Set in 1899.
