In the days between the great wars Jamie, the son of Lord Inchmarnock and Alejandro Medina, a Mexican orphan with a secret past and an amazing musical talent meet at school in Edinburgh. Jamie introduces Alejandro to Catriona Cameron Menmuir who notices the youngster's unusual grey blue eyes, so like those of her first husband who died in Mexico. Great changes face them all when war comes and Jamie's mother, Flora, persuades her husband to open his family home as a hospital. Jamie and Alejandro join the airforce and when they are shot down over France everyone pulls together to help one another.
