Gwayne Hall was not the refuge that Joan Gwayne would have chosen under other circumstances. The house of her ex-husband's mother. It brooded over a wild stretch of northern California coast like a prop from some wild horror movie. It was a castle, modeled after an original in Ireland, and Joan found it impossible to imagine someone so loving such a bleak place that they would have it reconstructed six thousand miles away. Hatred seemed to rule the castle, a cold presence that affected the several women living there…turning their minds to murder?

As soon as she arrived, Joan knew it had been a mistake to bring her crippled daughter here…but every time she tried to escape, something happened to stop her. As much as she hated the castle, someone seemed determined to keep her there, a prisoner…or a victim?
