Robbie Middleton's life goes on, whether or not he wants it to, after his admission to a VA mental ward follows a PTSD episode so vivid that it terrifies him. Once again his beloved Lou, the woman he came to love during their wartime exchange of letters, stands by him; but he knows the day may come when she's had enough. That has already happened twice, and each time she's taken him back. Loving him has cost her so much - and there is still no truly effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, as it's coming to be called. Robbie's battle with that invisible but all too real condition, World War II's blighted legacy to him and so many other no longer young veterans, will go on for as long as he lives. But so will his love for Lou, and her love for him. Even at those times when each turns to someone else for solace.
