Spring in Lapeer Parish, Louisiana. The warm sun beat down on the good, rich farm land making the best bean crop the county had ever seen. But something was stirring beneath the full, lush, green leaves. Something that had survived hundreds of thousands of years. Something that had hungered for too long.

Driven now, by some primeval force, they scurried from under logs, rocks, and rotted places. They scuttled out of dilapidated barns, tumble-down shacks and old storage bins. They crawled from beneath floors, out of walls and away from attics. The clicking of their jaws grew louder as their need of nourishment grew.
