This poetic historical romance, set against the background of the American Revolutionary War and featuring the Hamilton family, was one of Jewett's most popular novels. Published in 1901, it was also her last. A study of marriage and friendship, and a critique of patriotism and nationalism, Jewett comments on the imperialism of her time.
