The Toff and the Ted — John Creasey

In this tense thriller the Toff manages to jive a girl off the dancefloor, rescues a damsel in distress, wards off attacks from knife-throwers and infuriates the leaders of the Mob by leaving his rather special visiting card. The Toff is a private eye dedicated to the righting of major wrongs, to the rescue of maidens in distress, to the apprehension of all kinds and classes of criminals and to the conviction of murderers most foul. His characteristic calling card with top hat over an outline face with monocle, cigarette holder and bow tie brings hope to the fearful and fear to the guilty.
