Theone Barton had never known her parents; she was raised by relatives in an old house steeped in shadows and secrets. Then, one day, a man came along, determined to woo and win her.
Was it really because the awkward child had suddenly become a beautiful, desirable young woman? Or was there another, sinister, reason for his determined pursuit?
Tentacles of evil were reaching out for the frightened girl. Who wanted Theone out of the way? Was it the man who said he loved her?
It was a small, sleepy town, where nothing ever happened…nothing that anyone could see. But behind the seeming calm, barely hidden by the cool shadows of the Halstead house, a madman waited -- having successfully struck before, was waiting to strike again.
In a life untouched by violence, Theone Barton had never had cause to ask any questions concerning the shadowy circumstances of her birth.
