Life for former gunfighter Johnny Fierro has never been straightforward or easy. He and Lady Luck don't always see eye-to-eye. Some days he thinks she likes to turn the cards and stack the deck against him.

Although Fierro's returned to the Sinclair ranch, he still feels like an outsider. He doesn't believe this new life can last, or that he's found a place that he can finally call home. And, even as he struggles to settle into a normal life and build relationships with the various members of his once-estranged family, his past comes back to haunt him.
Lady Luck shows her hand, and once more his life is thrown into turmoil. His worst fears are realized. Two lawmen arrive at the ranch with a warrant for his arrest, and take him to Utah to stand trial. For murder.

And while he fights to avoid revealing the truth and escape the noose, newly forged family ties are tested to the limits as his brother, Guy, faces some unpalatable truths. Guy must question everything he thinks he knows about Johnny, and decide if he can not only live with what Johnny is capable of, but if he can continue to call him brother.
