Nothing much ever happened in Mallen, a small outback Australian town, until 1975 when a teenager was brutally raped and murdered and her body dumped in a swamp. She was deemed a runaway while the townsfolk sighed with relief and the case was closed.
Then the hauntings began.
The swamp that hides her body also holds a deadly secret that the local Aboriginals have known about for a very long time. It's cursed. What lies in there never dies, and one by one, those responsible for killing the teenager die.
1992. A stranger arrives in town. Ex undercover cop Kerry Staines just wants some peace, to start over as the town's new baker. The state government is going to build a maximum security prison a few miles from town on the edges of a swamp. It'll be good for business. But he's soon haunted by the ghost of a murdered teenager even though he doesn't believe in ghosts; and he's faced with the locals who seem… weird. For awhile he thinks he's losing his mind, as crazy as them, until he realizes an awful truth.
Kerry's history is almost as dark as the town's gruesome secrets -- some shameful pasts simply won't stay buried.
