The housekeeper stood facing me, color rising high in her cheeks.
"Now you wait a moment, young woman," she said, her voice dangerously calm. "If that's how you feel, you'd best go back where you came from. There was nothing wrong at Highgate until you came!"
But that couldn't be true. Why should my presence turn a perfectly charming Vermont vacation home into a house of horrors?
