Stanley Keys held the little town of Keysville. Maine, in an iron grip. He owned the town and controlled the lives of everyone who lived there. As a young man he had been popular with the townspeople, but twenty years had made a great change in him. Thinking that his bitter, black moods were due to the unhappy memories of his first wife, who had died under mysterious circumstances, the people of Keysville were hopeful when he married again. His new bride Gratia Hallet Keys came to Keysville with love and devotion in her heart, but the power of the past was too strong for her. It seemed to doom all of them.
