Life in the thirties is tough. There aren't enough jobs to go around and it's hard to make ends meet. Libby's a cut above most of her peers in Marthwaite, a down-and-out mill town. Her thirst for knowledge has brought her to the attention of Miss Carruther, a wealthy invalid who is looking for a Girl Saturday. Miss Carruther, a renowned anthropologist, decides to rescue Libby from a dismal future by sending her first to college then to a research post in the South-West Pacific.
