The Goose Bay Youth Center in Cantwell, Massachusetts seemed both a challenge and an opportunity to Carol Blythe, its attractive and amiable director and sole employee. Each afternoon at three o'clock, when she opened the place, she knew she would be confronted by economic and emotional problems, some easily solved, others beyond her knowledge and ability. Each evening when she closed, Carol had a sense both of accomplishment and failure.

But in general she believed the Center was making a contribution to the development of its young patrons and that she, therefore, was carrying her weight as an individual and meeting her responsibilities as a citizen. So it jolted her to be told that the Cantwell Improvement League was dropping its sponsorship of the Center on the grounds that it had not lessened delinquency in the city.
