Beautiful, independent Harriet Renshawe is a very exceptional young woman: mistress of Merriott Hall, she is more concerned with looking after the estate bequeathed by her father than with looking for a husband. There is Sir Edward Singleton, though. The handsome, eligible bachelor from London is very approving of Harriett's progressive and compassionate ideas for the villagers. Life would be pleasant indeed if it weren't for her clashes with Roger Bryden. From their first embarrassing meeting at the stream, that stubborn young man has disturbed her peace of mind. Why, then, is she so disappointed when she finally drives him away?
