Marion's life changed when two strangers walked into her parent's inn. Jeff and John, cousins in conflict. First over an inheritance, then over Marion's love. She had to choose.

"I've been looking for a girl like you all my life -- " Jeff had said. Then he leaned across the desk and kissed her with much fervor.

The words were still fresh in her mind when John spoke to her. "I need you. You'll never know -- " he said quietly.

Marion's life was no longer lonely -- or simple.

As Marion Mintern was sitting at the family table in the Coachman's Rest, an inn owned by her parents; she noticed a tall, dark young man enter the door and head for a table. Moments later, Marion thought she saw the same man reenter, and to her surprise, realized that there were actually two men who looked almost identical. Both were tall and dark, their features amazingly similar. This was Marion's first glimpse of John Fairchild and his distant cousin, Jeff Plain.

John Fairchild was the more reserved of the two, and apparently did not care for his relative very much. His only purpose in leaving Richmond and his architect's drawing board to come to the Tidewater area was to assume possession of Fairhaven, the old Georgian manor house bequeathed him by his cousin Emily.

Jeff, too, was interested in Fairhaven. His relationship with cousin Emily had been closer than John's, and he rather resented her not having left the house to him. Also, Emily had hinted to Jeff more than once that the house contained a valuable treasure.

When John learned that Marion had a history research major, he enlisted her help to reorganize Fairhaven's massive library -- and suddenly Marion found herself a rose between two thorns -- John and Jeff -- or so it seemed, at least, at the beginning.
