Erin was suddenly cold. She shivered in the deepening twilight. She wasn't sure she wanted to hear the secret of Dark Island, curious as she'd been. She didn't think she'd ever felt so lonely in her whole life. Even John, part of this place, this stretch of strand, this infinity of sea, and sky, and space, was alien to the safe world she'd always known. She was afraid. Bottomless, baseless, atavistic fear was panic in her throat.
