Riley Fox is an Iowa farm boy who heads to the Black Hills when gold is discovered. He accidentally kills a man and flees to Texas, beginning a life as a cowboy. He works a cattle drive north and ends up in Glendive, Montana, where he finds Kyra Alekhin, a woman like no other he has ever met. Tragedy follows, and a downward spiral from which he never recovers.
Range Cooper is an outlaw. His cowardly acts in the Civil War cause him to desert the Union Army and also head west. He becomes a very successful cattle rustler and thief, working from Wyoming to Canada.
Their lives are intertwined in ways that none of them know. As their past actions are slowly but surely exposed, the dominoes start falling and only one survives, albeit as a broken man. Years later he returns to The Nowhere Church to find that it too has had a life much like his -- birth, growth, and slow death.
