The Neighbors — Karen Cogan

Neighbors may live next door to one another without knowing each other's names. In the touching novel, THE NEIGHBORS, Abby and Vic don't know their neighbors. They are an older couple who value quietness and solitude. Abby is annoyed when the boy two houses away takes out his frustration by hitting tennis balls against the outside wall of his next-door neighbor's house. Abby's opinion of him is low until a chain of events begins to unfold. The boy takes a liking to her and Vic and helps the elderly husband shovel snow. He begins to call them Grandma and Grandpa in replacement for the grandparents who show no interest in him.
Krista is a young woman who lives next door to Abby and Vic. When Abby is too ill to bring in her groceries from the car, Krista helps Vic unload them. Then, Krista meets the handsome young man who lives at the end of the block. Their attraction is mutual and a relationship blooms. It becomes a cascading effect during the Christmas holidays until the residents of the cul-de-sac not only know one another but are more like family than neighbors.
