To the great unhappiness of a lovely young woman, Sarah, she is placed under the guardianship of Edward Channon when her father is murdered. Reserved and private, Edward's presence in the house of mourning makes her uneasy but is faintly enticing. She can enjoy the excitement of the coastal English village, even with the threat of Napoleon's invasion ever present.
