On the rebound from a failed marriage, Eric Auden visits the New York Museum of Art and walks away with a stolen artifact, a Cycladic statue called the Goddess of Desire. From that moment on, as the "goddess" speaks to him, his life becomes a whirlwind of dreams fulfilled: a mysterious woman enters his life; replicas of the statue earn him a fortune; and his secret theft defies discovery.
