Birch and Asa Tucker owned a fine string of Morgan horses, one of which was Birch's particular favourite. Then the horse turned up in Battleboro without its owner. Birch had been shot and left for dead, and so, with murder in his heart, Asa set out after the bushwhackers. However, he landed up in jail in Barnum, where a lynch mob stood waiting.
