Liza K. lives in the most wonderful place.
Some would say she and her mother were homeless. But Liza K. feels a special closeness to their yellow tent in the secret, unspoiled outpost of the Everglades called Gumbo Limbo Hammock. In the Hammock a colorful population of "woods people" lives alongside the Everglades' natural inhabitants. There is even swampland royalty: Dajun, a giant alligator, is the environmental protector of their haven.
Then, one day, this peaceful home is shattered. An official shows up with a gun -- looking for Dajun. Without Dajun, Gumbo Limbo's delicate balance will be destroyed. And suddenly even Liza K., who knows the big 'gator's ways, can't find him. She must find Dajun before the official does for time is running out for Gumbo Limbo.
